The Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, one of the oldest chapels in the Algarve, has a fascinating history. Built by the Knights Templars in the 13th Century, this isolated chapel is inland from Sagres and Cape St Vincent. The area was frequently raided and the Commission of Ransoms, which arranged the safe return of prisoners of war from the Moors, was set up here by King Afonso IV in 1352. In the 15th century it belongs to Prince Henry the Navigator. The chapel’s façade with its triangular gable has a bull’s eye window above the pointed arch that serves as its main door.
