The beautiful and historic Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Aracelis is a curiosity because it is shared between two neighbouring towns. The hermitage itself belongs to the municipality of Castro Verde, but the churchyard is located in the municipality of Mértola. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Aracelis (meaning Heavenly Altar) was once a place of pilgrimage. Set in stunning natural scenery, the trip to the hermitage is worth it for the views alone. Festivities are organised jointly in by the towns of Alcaria Ruiva (Mértola) and São Marcos da Atabueira (Castro Verde).
