Built in the 15th century and restored in the 19th century, the Ermida da Santa Bárbara is believed to be the first place of worship to have been built in Sao Miguel. This building is an interesting monastic institution of the 17th century with carved altars. It has a 17th century statue of the patron saint, Saint Barbara, and a polychrome azuelo tiled retable of the trânsito de São José (the ascension into heaven of Saint Joseph, father of Christ).
