About 12km east of Arcos de Velez is the village of Ermelo, where a monastery is set at the foot of a hill densely planted with orange trees alongside the River Lima. Built originally by the Benedictine order, the monastery was never opened as its founder abdicated. It was eventually converted into a parish church in the mid 16th century. The Romanesque church is delightful and you can still see the arches, which are all that remains of the monastery’s cloister. From the top of the hill there are spectacular views across the river.
