Enxaréus Grotto

On the shore of the island, about 7 km south of Santa Cruz, is the Galo cave, also known as Gruta Enxaréus. This interesting volcanic formation, which has an entrance that resembles the portal of a giant cathedral, is an enormous cavern measuring about 164 feet (50 m) long and 82 feet (25 m) wide. In earlier times it was used as a hideaway by pirates. The excursion to view the grotto is an interesting boat trip, allowing visitors to appreciate the attractive coast fringed by rocks and other smaller caves.
