Entroncamento, located approximately 9 km southeast of Torres Novas, is Portugal’s most important rail junction and the intended site for the country’s National Rail Museum. Its name means junction and the previous small village was transformed in the 19th century when it became the meeting point of the newly created Northern line with the Eastern line and railway workers settled here. The town’s links with the railway are apparent everywhere, as in the public garden where the decoration consists of an ancient locomotive, which is used as a Tourist Office. Also notable is the fine Cottinelli Telmo(1897-1948) designed former Railway School building.
