Housed on the site of the old Funchal Power Plant, which was decomissioned in 1989, the Casa da Luz Electricity Museum was opened in 1997 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the introduction of electricity to Madeira. It has proved itself to be one of the most attractive and interesting museums in Funchal. It concentrates on four main themes, the Lights of Funchal, a Century of Electricity, Madeira Sources of Energy and the Interactive Science and Technology Hall, where you can play with various types of electrical equipment. The museum’s contents include rare machinery and equipment from more than 100 years.
