Professor Egaz Moniz (1874-1955) was born in Avanca and became a distinguished neurologist and also, at one time, Portugal’s foreign minister. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1949, he was professor of neurology at Lisbon University from 1911 until his retirement in 1944. The Egas Moniz House Museum is in Avanca about 17 km southwest of Santa Maria da Feira. The house has architectural interest and contains Professor Moniz’s valuable art collection of furniture, porcelain, glassware, Portuguese paintings, engravings, sculpture, gold items and tapestries. There are also the scientific objects and documents used in his medical research.
