The statue to Dr Sousa Martins (1843-1897) erected in 1904 outside the Faculty of Medicine, honours a doctor who devoted his life to work amongst the poor of Lisbon. He specialised in the treatment of tuberculosis and committed suicide after he himself had contracted the disease. The statue has almost become a shrine and is surrounded by marble plaques, flowers and burning candles, giving thanks for miraculous cures and people still believe his spirit can assist them. He is treated as a saint by many, in spite of the fact that he has never been venerated by the Catholic Church.
