This Alhandra Museum, opened in 1992, honours Dr José Thomás de Sousa Martins (1843-1897) the 19th century doctor who was born in the town and is renowned for his work amongst the poor in Lisbon. He himself died of tuberculosis and has achieved almost cult status. The museum not only displays scientific documents and personal possessions of Dr Sousa Martins but exhibits items related to the history and life of the region. These include tile manufacture, a section devoted to daily life in the Lezíria area and another on sport in Alhandra.
