Inaugurated in 1894, the Dr Santos Rocha Municipal Museum did not have a permanent home until 1970 and is now housed in a building it shares with the Municipal Library. It is named after the archaeologist who was its first director and its notable archaeological collection is of national importance. Exhibits include religious art and sculptures, ceramics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, coins and weapons. There are also African and Oriental costumes and other ethnology, contemporary paintings, sculptures and Arraiolos carpets. In 1993 it received the ‘Best Museum of the Year’ prize.
