The existing municipal football stadium was virtually rebuilt for the finals of the Euro 2004 competition. It was designed by the celebrated Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira (b.1938), whose other projects include the Amoreiras Towers in Lisbon. The design has an undulating roof, constructed to take advantage of the stadium’s wonderful setting and its magnificent view of the medieval Leiria castle. The use of contrasting colours is a feature of the external perimeter and is matched by the multi-coloured seats inside. The stadium is multi-purpose and includes facilities for track and field events; it is also used for concerts.
