The Teatro Nacional Donna Maria II, located on the north side of the Rossio (Praça de Dom Pedro IV), was built in the 1840s largely due to the efforts of the writer Almeida Garrett. The Neo-Classical design, by Italian architect Fortunato Lodi, replaced the 15th century Estaus Palace, used as the Inquisition Palace where gruesome public executions took place, which was destroyed by fire in 1836. The theatre interior was also gutted by fire in 1964, but reopened in 1978. Assis Rodrigues’ statue of Gil Vicente (1463-1536), founder of the Portuguese theatre, is on top of the pediment.
