Inside the castle walls is the 15/16th century Gothic church of Santa Maria do Castelo which is now the Don Lopo de Almeida Museum. The carved stone tombs of the Almeida family, the ruling counts of Abrantes, are housed here, as are local archaeological finds, religious vestments, ethnography and carved gilded woodwork. Of greatest interest is the collection of Seville gold and enamel ceramic tiles made by the medieval dry rope technique (corda seca), this is said to be the finest in Portugal. There is also a permanently renewed exhibition of sacred art.
