Claimed to be the only remaining Romanesque civic building in Portugal, the Domus Municipalis has recently been restored. Its irregular pentagonal shape makes it unique in Europe, but there is some doubt about its origin. Built above a cistern, which is generally thought to be from the 12th century and served as the town reservoir, the town hall structure possibly dates from the 13th century. The cistern can be seen through a floor grille, and the spacious gallery with benches served as the meeting place. Note the decorated internal and external cornices. The roof dates from the latest restoration.
