Situated in the Public Gardens are the remains of the 16th century Palace of Dom Manuel, also known as the Royal palace of São Francisco. Built by the Avis dynasty in a mixture of Gothic, Manueline, neo-Moorish and Renaissance styles, all that now remains is the Gallery of Ladies, where it is said that Vasco da Gama received his command of the squadron he led to discover the sea route to India. Seven plays by the famous dramatist Gil Vicente were performed here in the great hall and dedicated to Queen D. Maria of Castile and D. Catherine of Austria.
