Faro developed its culture and industry because of the dedication of many men, one of whom was the bishop of the Algarve. Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar (1736-1816) devoted his life and fortune to the improvement of Faro, largely through the construction of monuments and other buildings of public interest. A statue was erected by the people as a mark of homage and gratitude to their benefactor. The statue stands at the city’s historical centre, in front of the Bishop’s Palace and the Parish Church.
