The Dolmen of Zambujeiro in Valverde is the biggest dolmen known in the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its importance, Anta Grande do Zambujeiro was declared a national monument by the Portuguese government. It was constructed between 4,000 BC to 3,500 BC and consists of a free-standing single-chamber dolmen, which was used by Neolithic communities as a burial place and also possibly for religious purposes. The chamber is made of seven large stones that rise 8m above the ground and was once covered by a 7m wide stone. The entrance was marked by a large, decorated menhir, now lying on the ground.
