The Diário de Notícias Newspaper Building was built between 1936-1939 and designed by the influential architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957); it won the Valmor Prize for architecture in 1940. It was the first building in Portugal to be designed specifically for a newspaper and was both innovative and Modernist in design. The newspaper is one of the leading daily papers and in the 1870s and 1880s employed the leading novelist Eça de Queiroz (1845-1900), some of whose London letters were published in book form as ‘Cartas de Inglaterra’. Inside there are frescoes by painter, writer and poet Almada Negreiros (1893-1970).
