The interesting and attractive Diogo Bernardes Theatre was built in 1893 on the initiative of a number of Ponte de Lima citizens. Built in Italian theatre style, to the design of António Adelino de Magalhães Moutinho, the Viana do Castelo city architect, it was named after a 16th century Portuguese poet. After falling into a bad state of repair, complete restoration was undertaken by the Ponte de Lima council and completed in 1999. Most of the structure and decoration have been preserved and the theatre is now multi-purpose, being also used for conferences, music festivals etc.
