Cuba was conquered by King Sancho I in the 12th century. The town’s name comes from either the finding of cubas there (vessels to store wine), or from the word coba, meaning tower in Arabic. It is a typical Alentejo town, with white-washed houses decorated with blue or ochre trimmed window frames. The town has several interesting churches and is proud of its long tradition in the cantares alentejanos (choirs of men singing without musical instruments). Nearby there are megalithic remains, such as the cromlechs near Vila Alva and the menhir at Horta dos Canos do Meio.
