The Via Sacra is a winding path in the National Forest of Buçaco leading to the Cruz Alta, which at 545 metres is the highest point of the forest. Marked with a cross, there are glorious views as far as the sea. The original steps of the Via Sacra were set out in 1668 and marked with Brazilian wood crosses and in 1693 the Bishop of Coimbra had chapels built. In the 18th century, clay figures replaced the original painted scenes in the chapels. The present 20 chapels have life-size clay figures in scenes from the Passion, made by Costa Mota in 1930.
