The Cárquere Monastery is located about 5 km southeast of Resende and, according to legend, the settlement originates from the church which Count Dom Henrique ordered to be built. This was in thanksgiving for the miraculous cure of a congenital illness affecting Portugal’s future first King Afonso Henriques. The present church is in Manueline style, with a late 13th century Gothic style main chapel. The effigies in the church are remarkable and include an ivory carving of Nossa Senhora de Cárquere and a sculpture of the Virgin Mary in Ançã stone.
