Christopher Columbus (1451 - 1506), although not Portuguese by birth, made Portugal his home. Known as ’the man who discovered America’, Columbus was trying to find a westward sea passage to the Orient when he first sighted the island that would later be called Cuba, on October 28, 1492. During a second voyage in 1494, Columbus passed along the south coast of the island, landing at various inlets including what was to become Guantánamo Bay. A great navigator, Columbus was not a good administrator and was accused of mismanagement. He died on 20 May 1506.
