King Sancho I (1185-1211) granted Covilhã a charter in 1186 and built the castle and the city walls. The great earthquake of 1755 destroyed the castle and little is left today except remnants of the five towered entrance gates. These are located in the Calçada de Santa Cruz, Rua do Norte, Rua António Augusto de Aguiar and Rua João de Almeida. One castle tower was used in the construction of the Paços do Castelo. City development saw the disappearance of the old walls, although some of the stone was used in the building of the Royal Textile Factory.
