Covilhã, with its steep winding streets, is a popular place for setting out to explore the Serra da Estrela and is also the focal point of the Portuguese textile industry. The centre of the town is the flower bedecked Praça do Município and the Town Hall. Apart from attractions separately listed, there is the Municipal Park, within the walls that once enclosed a Franciscan convent. Its 16th century Conceição church, with a 19th century façade, is still open in the Rua de Santo António. There are fine views from the Conceição monument.
