The 14th century Dominican Corpus Christi convent was originally located closer to the River Douro, but was rebuilt in the 17th century as a result of flooding problems. It was altered from time to time until the banning of religious orders in 1834. The church is polygonal in shape and is notable for its sumptuous panelled ceiling. Inside is the tomb of Álvaro de Cernache, who was the standard bearer of the left flank of the Portuguese army at the Battle of Aljubarotta (1385). This battle ended the 1383-1385 Crisis and established John I of Portugal on the throne.
