São Domingos, Mertola - Portugal

Map

São Domingos was mined for copper from Roman times until the early 1960s, when the mine was finally abandoned. A walk around the village’s streets brings the memory of the past to life. Not far from the village, you can visit what remains of the former São Domingos copper mine including the old miners` residential quarter and the platform of the railway line that once used to convey the copper ore to the river port of Pomarão. From there it was transported by boat to the estuary at Vila Real de Santo António.
