The Monastery of Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit) was built during the 17th century and rebuilt in the 18th century after the structure suffered major damage in the earthquake of 1755. Expropriated in the 19th century, it has recently been turned into a cultural centre housing the Municipal Art Gallery and a small collection of exhibits relating to the textile industry in the Loulé region. Among the objects on show is what is termed an “orphans’ wheel", a device which allowed unwanted babies to be left anonymously. These infants were then dependent on the charity of the religious order.
