The Convent of São Gonçalo was the first convent to be built in Angra do Heroísmo, and is the largest complex of convent buildings in the city. Founded in 1545, it was subsequently remodelled. Although the Church has a very simple exterior, the interior has several notable attractions, such as the gilded woodwork altarpieces, 18th-century statues and paintings and azulejo-tile panels dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The large-scale 17th-century crucifix, the "Cristo Divino Imperador" is attributed to the Spanish school and a magnificent railing is a unique example of Portuguese architecture due to its oval form.
