Dating back to 1275, the Convento de São Francisco is considered the oldest religious building in Portalegre. Of the original structure, only the gothic Church, which was rebuilt in 1711, remains to house the recumbent tomb of Gaspar Fragoso, knight to King Sebastião (1557-78). In the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Piety), there is a renaissance tomb of Nuno Vaz de Sousa Tavares (16th century). The church is currently home to the Portalegre Theatre Company. Since the 19th century the outer buildings of the convent have been owned by the Robinson cork manufacturing company. The cork factory now includes a museum devoted to this industry.
