The convent of Santa Clara (Saint Claire) was founded in 1376 by Leonor Teles, wife to King Fernando (1367-83). Constructed on the site of a former royal palace, the building has been much modified. Originally gothic, now only the cloisters remain from the original structure. After the death of the last abbess at the end of the 19th century, the building was no longer used for religious purposes, but became home to various charity institutions. After purchase by Portalegre Municipal Council, it has functioned as the City Library since 1999.
