The Gothic style Convento de Jesus is Setubal’s most noteworthy monument, described by Hans Christian Andersen as ‘one of the most beautiful small churches I have ever seen’. It was built in 1494 on the initiative of Justa Rodrigues Pereira, nurse and lover of King Manuel I, for the Order of Saint Claire. Designed by Diogo Boitac, who was also responsible for the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, it is an outstanding example of early Manueline style architecture. Notable features of the church are the carved twisted rope columns and ribs in local Arrábida pink stone, the decorated entrance and the tiled panels.
