The Convent was founded in 1459 and dedicated to Our Lady of Conception. Construction continued throughout the reigns of Kings João II (1481-95) and Manuel I (1495-1521). One of the great examples of the late-Gothic architectural style, as used in the Batalha Monastery, it is also the first national interpretation of the Manueline style, found in the carved roping, the spires and the dining hall entranceway. In the cloisters are some fine examples of 16th, 17th and 18th century tiling from Seville. Also noteworthy are the gold-leafed, carved altars and the finishings in the Capital Room.
