The Convento de Nossa Senhora da Estrela, founded in 1488 beyond the walls of Marvão, belonged to the Mendicant Order of St. Francis. The original Gothic structure was greatly changed in the 18th century, when the masonry altar and aszuelo panels were added. The chapel’s altar, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Estrela (Our Lady of the Star), has an 18th-century altarpiece, made of Estremoz marble, which forms the throne for a 16th-century statue of Our Lady with the Baby Jesus, made of Ançã stone. In the churchyard is the Manueline Cross of the Star, an interesting religious symbol from the end of the 15th century.
