The convent was founded in 1509 by Queen Leonor; the original building complex being in the Manueline style. The earthquake of 1755 caused great damage to the buildings, which were reconstructed in the reign of King José I. Only one of the two cloisters and a small side portal remain from the original. The buildings were used as a convent until 1871. The interior is now regarded as one of the best in the city, the pulpit and altar in Talha woodwork are worthy of particular note. The complex is now partly occupied by the national tile museum.
