The 16th century Manueline church is considered one of Portugal’s finest monuments in this architectural style. Primarily the work of Diogo de Arruda, it was commissioned by King Manuel I, whose initials and insignia are incorporated in the ornate ribbed vaulting. The other architect involved was the Spaniard, João de Castilho. The exterior is sumptuously decorated and the south portal is particularly noteworthy. The splendour of the complex, and ornate chapterhouse window, is renowned and it is widely regarded as the finest single creation of Manueline architecture. Note the extensive use throughout of maritime motives.
