The great complex of the Convent of Christ and the Templar’s Castle, situated on a hill overlooking Tomar, is one of Portugal’s most important architectural accomplishments, it embodies more than five centuries of construction and seven centuries of Portuguese history. In 1983 it was given World Heritage status by UNESCO. Initiated by the Knights Templar in the 12th century and, after they were suppressed in the 14th century, continued by the Order of Christ which inherited their property. Its four main components are the Templar’s Castle, the Charola Church, the Manueline Church and the extensive Cloisters.
