Towards the east, on the other side of the square housing the Roman Temple, is the church of the Convent dos Lóios. This religious structure was built between 1485 and 1491. It has undergone considerable renovations during the succeeding centuries. The Manueline porch formed part of the original structure, and bears the arms of the de Melos who founded the church and are buried there. The former chapterhouse, through the cloister, has Manueline stellar vaulting. It has been listed as a National Monument. The Biblioteca Pública, the public library, is in another part of the building and contains about 2,000 incunabula and manuscripts.
