Situated at the junction of the Zêzere and Tagus rivers, about 12 km west of Abrantes, is Constância, a whitewashed town with cobbled streets, considered one of the prettiest in the Tagus Valley. Once the Roman town of Pugna Tagi, it was here that the British army assembled during the Penisular War as they prepared to march into Spain. Worth seeing are the Igreja Matriz and the 1636 Misericórdia church, this was restored in the 19th century and has a ceiling painting from 1890. The Boatmen’s Festival takes place over Easter week with its highlight, the procession, on the Monday
