Located next to the beach of the same name, Consolação Fort was built in 1641, on the orders of King João IV, as part of the defensive system for the Peniche coast. The inscription over the main gate, which also bears the royal coat of arms, confirms that the fort was completed in 1645. The artillery here, combined with that of the Peniche fortress, was an obstacle to any further foreign landing. It was on this coast in 1589 that António, Prior of Crato, a claimant to the throne, landed with a British army, an expedition made possible by Queen Elizabeth I.
