Two kilometres southeast of Condeixa-a –Nova and sixteen kilometres southwest of Coimbra, is the most extensive Roman archaeological site in Portugal. Visit the excellent museum there first (see separate entry). Previously a Celtic settlement, there is evidence of Roman presence in Conímbriga as early as the 2nd century BC, but the town was destroyed by the Suevi in 468 AD, during the barbarian invasions. There is much to see, but amongst the highlights are the Casa de Cantaber, a luxurious villa with a heating system, ornamental pools, and colonnaded gardens, and the House of Fountains which is under protective cover.
