This municipal cultural centre, which opened in 1984, is located 11km south of Vila Nova de Gaia. Originally a medieval residence, it was later owned by the Counts of Resende. The great Portuguese writer Eça de Queiroz (1845-1900), whose work was praised by Emile Zola, fell in love here and married Emília de Resende, daughter of his friend the Count. A garden was planted in his honour and is named after him. The Camellia Garden is another feature, with trees more than 100 years old. The museum contains documents from the middle ages. There is a temporary exhibition area and an archaeological laboratory.
