The present Conceição Velha Church was built following the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, reusing elements of the façade of the old Church of Our Lady of Mercy (Misericórdia) destroyed in that disaster. These elements date from the early 16th century and are of the Manueline style. The beautiful and elaborate portal is attributed to the architect Joao de Castilho. The façade is regarded as one of the best examples of Manueline architecture remaining in the city. The 18th century interior is decorated with tiles and stucco work.
