The Compromisso Marítimo was a welfare institution for the sailors and fishermen of Faro. Their occupations provided the prosperity on which the town was founded and this was the town’s way of giving something back to them. The Casa do Compromisso Marítimo de Faro is an early 18th century building, which was erected on the site of a house from medieval times. The main facade incorporates a statue of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo. The arches on the side facade housed the mariners’ slaughterhouse. On the upper storey is the Assembly Hall, which has a box-vaulted ceiling decorated with oil paintings.
