Porto is a city with a number of fine historic fountains and one of these is located next to the Largo da Alfândega, in the Rua de Miragaia. Known as the Colher fountain, it is considered to be one of the oldest in the city. Built initially in 1491, it was reconstructed in granite in 1629, a fact confirmed by inscription on the granite tablet at the front. Consisting of a single spout, its water had the reputation of being the best in the city .The fountain is named after the tax from which it was originally funded.
