The Jesuit church was completed in 1647 and, together with the college, was for a long time the largest building complex in Funchal. The exterior is attractive, but it is the 17th century gilt wood carving inside that is the outstanding highlight and regarded as one Portugal’s most important examples of this work; the high altar in particular is a masterpiece. The walls of the church are covered with azulejos of exceptional beauty and of the chapels that of the ‘Eleven Thousand Virgins’ is outstanding.
