The 17th century Coimbra entry gate to the National Forest of Buçaco is of particular historic interest. Marble plaques display the text of two papal bulls, on the left that of Pope Gregory dated 1622, designed to keep monks free from temptation, by banning women from this ‘garden of Eden’. On the right is the bull of Pope Urbano VIII dated 1643, forbidding the cutting down trees or causing other damage; both bulls threaten excommunication. Of the other gates, the Porta da Rainha was built for Catherine of Bragança’s cancelled visit in 1693 and then sealed for 11 years.
