The quadrangular crenellated Clock Tower (Torre do Relógio) was the castle keep and formed part of the town’s defensive walls. Originally constructed in the 15th century, it gave access to the town and was known as Porta de Viana. It was converted into a clock tower in the 17th century. The town was first fortified in the 13th century and subsequently reinforced and modified. Other fortifications remaining from this time are the walls and ramparts, the Bastion of Matriz next to the Igreja Matriz, the Bastion de Santo António next to the Convent of Santo António and the Muralha da Graça wall.
