Cividade Hill is just outside Terroso, which is about 5.5 km northeast of Póvoa de Varzim and on the hilltop, at a height of 153 metres, are the remains of Cividade de Terroso. This was an important ancient city of the Castro culture which was inhabited for about 1000 years, approximately from 900 BC to 100 AD. It lasted and prospered due to its powerful defensive system, until destroyed by the Romans around 150 BC, about the time the Lusitanian leader Viriathus was killed. Although rebuilt, it was gradually abandoned around 100 AD. There is a small museum at the entrance.
